Apple iTunes Match, are you ready?

This year’s schedule is hidden behind a login screen, but the publicly viewable landing page lists five technology tracks:

According to sources who have seen the full schedule, developers can expect the usual. The Apple Design Awards and the traditional Stump the Experts events will be held on Tuesday evening, while the WWDC Bash will be held on Thursday evening, at the Yerba Buena Gardens.

In San Francisco, where Apple is hosting their annual Worldwide Developer Conference — and, more directly important to the masses of Apple fans around the world, the WWDC Keynote.Many time slots are currently listed as "To Be Announced," which has been used in the past for sessions relating to something that hasn’t yet been announced. Apple has already said that the WWDC keynote will focus on Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion," iOS 5, and iCloud, and it’s quite likely the TBA slots will be sessions relating to those three areas.



June 6-10, the biggest news in digital music has been Apple's announcement that, for $25 a year (UK price yet to be confirmed), users can make all of the music from their computer's hard drive available to download to any of their Apple devices, with its new iTunes Match feature. Given that they could have done that by plugging the device into said computer anyway, this doesn't seem like such a big deal, especially as it's unlikely that their phone or iPod will match their computer's storage capacity anyway. "It takes just minutes. Not weeks," said Jobs on the turnover time to upgrading your music, using hyperbole to poke fun at competitors Google and Amazon who have also recently launched their own cloud services.

Indeed, the main beneficiaries may well be those with low-quality, illegally downloaded MP3s, whose files will be converted into better-quality versions by the service. Interesting, too, that Apple is sticking resolutely to the theory that songs you'd like to hear should exist on your device, rather than moving towards the streaming models that make Spotify and YouTube so popular. We'll only discover the true impact of iTunes Match towards the end of the year, when it launches here, but it doesn't yet appear to be the game-changer many predicted.
